Legalize the Green Stuff

The proposed question that proved to be the most numerous during President Obama's recent online chat session with the country was whether or not the US government would finally come around to legalize Cannabis. While Obama neglected to discuss the matter directly, the question still remains up in the air. The American economy has seen better days, and legalizing Cannabis could offer a little slack under increasing pressures. Not only would it serve as another source of tax income, but it would open hundreds of thousands of new jobs to employ American citizens, ranging from the growing and cultivating to processing and packaging to marketing... the list doesn't end there. Aside from the huge amount of money Cannabis could dump into the economy, it would also ease burdens currently being placed on our prison system and save countless dollars in the war against drugs. Regulation could be fairly simple if the government placed constraints on the purchasing of Cannabis similar to that of alcohol. And the danger of buying the product off the streets would be completely eliminated, and drug dealers everywhere would lose all of their business naturally through the ways of the market -- law enforcement wouldn't even have to track them down! The demand has been and will always be around in this country, and the only thing the US government has to do is harness some of that potential and turn it into gold. The process has already been done in places such as the Netherlands, why not in the land of the free?

  1. To legalize marijuana would be one of the most devastating blows America could possible face. On the surface it does not look like it would be that big of a deal but trust me there is way more to it, then just allowing people to smoke. Marijuana is considered to be one of the most “social accepted” drugs amongst America. It is one of the most highly addictive gate way drug you could use. If marijuana use is legalized, problems that we could have never imagined will arise in society. Yes crime/imprisonment for possession and trafficking of marijuana will decrease but more heinous and violent crimes will arise. If the use of marijuana is legalized then drug dealers will move on to something else illegal to sell. It is like the selling of alcohol. You can go out today and buy your normal run of the mill alcohol for a reasonable price but back during prohibition the price of alcohol was ridiculous and everyone wanted it. The same will happen with marijuana. People are going to always want what they cant or are not suppose to have. Alcohol is bad enough in America and should be outlawed because nothing good/productive comes out of drinking. The only problem is too many Americans have already accepted it as part of their culture and would never want to have to give it up the common good of man. You would have people saying that this is America the home of the free and it is their right as an America to be able to drink if they want to. Which is true but where do we draw the line? Why shouldn’t we legalize marijuana? Because its “bad”, because bad things will happen if we legalize it. Yes all this is true but the same hold true for alcohol and tobacco as well but because this is America and people make millions off of it. I think America is already on a slippery slope and we should not do anything else to jeopardize our title as a “superpower” or a great nation! But you don’t have to take my word for it.

  2. Legallizing marijuana would be the most ridiculous thing America could do. While I agree it was stupid to make alcohol and even cigarettes legal when they directly affect innocent people. Legallizing marijuana would still affect innocent people often times children; marijuana is a highly addictive gateway drugs, it leads to stronger drug use most of the time. People become addicts many are very promiscuous resulting in babies born addicted or children abandoned by one or both parents. It alters your judgement, slowing your response time; if you are driving or caring for your children it is important to be aware of your surroundings to respond appropiately. Marijuana leading to more highly addictive drugs effects your finance, because addicts will often times use rent or bill money to get their fix. I think there are many things that should be illegal because while the alter a person's judgement there are too many innocent people being hurt by being so carefree. Freedom and carefree are not of the same. Mind altering drugs such as alcohol, marijuana, cigarettes, etc. is carefree it is selfish and inconsiderate of others; while freedom is living life to the fullest and expressing yourself with respect of other people.
